After 22 years it's time for Martinair to end its MD-11 operations for good!
End of the road for dutch MD-11 operations. Today the 27th June marks an historic moment for the dutch aviation industry. The final Martinair MD-11 PH-MCP made its final landing at Amsterdam Schiphol airport, captained by George de Waard. As the engines were shut down and
In 1994 on 2nd December the first McDonnell Douglas MD-11CF was delivered to the Dutch passenger and freight airline Martinair. Throughout the next few years four MD-11CF's and two MD-11F's were delivered. In 2004 they added a seventh MD-11, this one being ex Swissair HB-IWC. After a total of nearly 22 years of service for Martinair in July 2016 the last two aircraft will be withdrawn from service PH-MCU on 1st July and finally PH-MCP (first one to be delivered to Martinair) on 8th July, ending a 23 year relationship between the MD-11 and dutch airlines. Martinair were the launch customer for the MD-11CF (convertible freighter) and were the only airline to receive them, after 2006 they where only used for freight due to low passenger demand and in 2011 Martinair completely ended its passenger operations. On the 11-06-2016 PH-MCP conducted two flybys as part of the airshow at Leeuwarden airbase. This aircraft was the first to be delivered to the airline and will be the last to leave, the flybys are a final farewell before returning to Amsterdam to carry out its normal duties until 8th July. |

Thousands of people gathered at the airshow to take these historic memorable photographs and videos for the world to see. Unfortunately none of the Martinair MD-11's could be saved and have been sold to the US freight airline Fedex to be used for spares to keep their aircraft flying. Sadly this ends another chapter for McDonnell Douglas and an even bigger one for Martinair with them only having one 747-400F left in the fleet. Maybe someday one can be saved but for now everyone must cherish the memories and bid PH-MCP farewell!
