In December 1994 the Dutch passenger and cargo airline received its first MD-11 PH-MCP which was the Convertible Freighter version or CF for short. In total Martinair would receive six brand new MD-11s from McDonnell Douglas over a three year period, the first four being Convertible Freighters registered PH-MCP, PH-MCR, PH-MCS and PH-MCT. The final two MD-11s where freighter version, PH-MCU being delivered in 1996 and PH-MCW in 1998.
After 10 years of MD-11 operations Martinair added a seventh MD-11 to the fleet. Construction number 48445 was originally delivered to Swissair registered HB-IWC was then delivered to Martinair on 03rd September 2004 registered PH-MCY. The aircraft served the Dutch airline for 11 years and was returned to the lessor on 19th December 2015, it flew to Mojave via Miami for part out and scrap ending its 24.9 years of service with various airlines.
In 2011 Martinair went to an all cargo airline operating MD-11s and Boeing 747s. June 2016 will see the final McDonnell Douglas MD-11 leave the fleet. No aircraft will be replacing the MD-11s so Martinair will be a Boeing 747 only fleet. This will not only be sad for the airline and spotters who will have to say goodbye to other legend but it will also mark the end of MD-11 operations by Dutch airlines which first began with KLM Royal Dutch Airlines in 1993.
